Some of you may already have heard that IGDA Perth is holding a post-Nullarbor event for those who couldn’t get enough of Interzone Nullarbor at G03 just over a month ago. SIGGRAPH Perth April Screening

23 April, 2007
6:30 pmto8:30 pm

As a SIGGRAPH Perth committee member-at-large I’m once again giving a plug for their next event. If you are interested in attending though, don’t forget to RSVP.

SIGGRAPH 2005 Conference Special Session Screening Details:

  • Time/Date: 6:30pm, Monday, 23rd of April 2007
  • Location : eCentral TAFE (in Theatrette B202), 140 Royal St, East Perth
  • Cost: Members - Free, Non-members $10 ($5 for students)

If you’ve never been to a SIGGRAPH Perth event, check out Nick’s post and if you’re wondering what this screening is all about, here’s an abstract excerpt from SIGGRAPH Perth’s website:

In this presentation, three ILM legends, Dennis Muren, John Knoll and Rob Coleman walk us through all six instalments in the series, comparing the techniques that ILM employed over the years to bring these historical environments, characters and space battles to the big screen.

This informative talk features rare “behind the scenes” video and imagery from the production of the Star Wars series. From puppets to cinematography, pre-vis to photo realistic digital characters, this rich material provides a unique perspective on the past, present and future of Cinema Visual Effects.

In case you were wondering, the speakers won’t be physically giving the presentation at eCentral TAFE but rather it’s a playback of a presentation originally given at SIGGRAPH’s 2005 Conference Special Session. Enjoy.

Video Game Trivia Night photos

The quiet before the storm. We thought that the projector was crap… but it turned out that we just had the (translucent) lens cap on… who makes a see-through lens cover anyway!?

The crowds discuss their answers in darkness… it wasn’t really that dark, it’s just hard to take good photos in low-light!

A huge thanks goes out to our sponsors: Gametraders (Carillon Arcade), TimeZone (Northbridge), and the GO3 Electronic Entertainment Expo. This event would never have been the successs it was without your support. Thanks also to our discount voucher sponsors: Orbit Amusements, Maoz, and Industria.

Special thanks to the venue; all the equipment was great and the staff were very helpful. Thanks to all attendees for supporting the event. We assure you that there will be many OneTwenty events in future! My greatest thanks goes out to Minh (our Events Coordinator) and the entire Events Team. You put on a great event and should all be very proud!

Note: The Orbit 2-for-1 vouchers have an expiry date of December 2006, but Orbit have assured us that they will be accepted!

Last 10 Video Game Trivia Night Tickets

UPDATE: All 10 tickets have now been sold.

We have sold all our tickets for the Video Game Trivia Night! However, the Velvet Lounge have graciously allowed us to squeeze in a few more tables (they advise these tables may be on wheels). So we have 10 more tickets available to sell.

If you’re interested in purchasing these tickets, please let us know via our contact page and we’ll reserve the tickets for you at the door.

For those who have already bought their tickets, we thank you for your support and see you Monday!!

Last chance for $5 Video Game Trivia Night tickets!

Tomorrow (Monday, 19th March) is the last day that tickets to the Video Game Trivia Night will be available for $5. From Tuesday (20th March) tickets will be $10. Tickets are available exclusively from Game Traders Carillion (in Carillon Arcade, Perth City). The event is scheduled for 7:30pm, Monday 26 March at the Velvet Lounge in Mount Lawley.

We’ve finished writing the questions and collecting the prizes. Here is some quick information for those still undecided on whether or not to attend. Our major sponsors and prizes include:

We also have a number of additional special prizes from Gametraders, and a number of discount coupons available to all attendees:

  • Orbit Amusemens: 2-for-1 coupons
  • Maoz: free upgrade coupons
  • Industria: 10% discount coupons

For those that haven’t been to a trivia night before, the general process involves: meeting up with friends (maybe new friends!) to form a group, listening and watching the quiz-master, writing down your answers, handing them in at the end of a round, and then finding out how you went as the quiz-master presents the answers. Imagine a few rounds of that with some intermittent challenges, spot prizes, eating, drinking, and general merriment… and you have a trivia night.

The questions we have range from easy to very difficult (with a fair amount of humour and gamer in-jokes thrown in for good measure). Given the size of the venue (~60 people max) and the number of prizes we have, there is a pretty good chance that you will walk away with something!

Hope to see you at the Video Game Trivia night!

BTW: There will be a special prize waiting for the holder of ticket #01. Thanks for being our first supporter!

Nullarbor 2007 Update

I sent an email asking Martin Masek some questions about Nullarbor. For those who are planning on making a submission, the following information may be helpful:

  • The submission deadline is midnight between 30th & 31st March.
  • The competition runs for 3 days (30th March - 1st April) with the prize ceremony on Sunday 1st April.
  • You should be able to attend the GO3 conference without it conflicting with your Nullarbor commitments.
  • Keep intermediate versions of your progress to prove originality upon the judge’s request.
  • The competition PC specifications are HP DC 7100 Desktops (3.2GHz/1GB DDR2/40GB HD/XP PRO/17″ TFT DISPLAY) with POV GS7600 512MB Graphics Card.
  • It is advisable to make sure your submission works on the competition PCs prior to the deadline. Enquiries should be directed to Martin Masek or Adrian Boeing.
  • More rules specific to your category can be found here.

Good luck with your submissions!

GO3 Conference Early Bird ticket sales ending tomorrow

Just a quick post. I just sent this email to the PIGMI mailing list regarding the upcoming GO3 Electronic Enterntainment Expo:

Hi *,

Just a heads-up that tomorrow (Thursday 15 February) is the last day
for Early Bird tickets to the GO3 Conference. If you are planning on
going, you can save up to $90 by booking by tomorrow.

For me personally, the presence of John Passfield, Tetsuya Mizuguchi,
Goichi Suda, Masaya Matsuura, and Hideo Kojima have guaranteed that
I’m splashing out on the Super Pass. I want to be able to attend
everything (including those basic networking opportunities at lunch
and snacks).

Opportunities like this don’t come to Perth often; When I suggested a
long list of speakers to this mailing list; I never imagined that so
many people from that list would actually end up coming here!

- Nick

Although the Early Bird registration deadline was previously extended, I don’t expect that to happen again.

Things like this don’t come to Perth often and if we don’t support it, they it may not return. Here are some links to the conference details, registration, and information for international and interstate delegates.

Did someone say… Video Game Quiz Night?

OneTwenty is looking to organise a video game quiz night for our next event. So before we lock down a venue, secure prizes, prepare game excerpts and don our quizmaster capes, we would like to know who would be interested in attending such an event. We don’t want it to be too big or too small!

Tentative Details:

  • Date: Week day, mid-March to late March
  • Tickets : $5 pre-ordered, $10 on the night
  • Location: Not sure, open to suggestions
  • Food/Drinks: Depending on venue, can be bought on premises or BYO
  • Content: We won’t discriminate (There should be something for everyone!)
  • Prizes: We’re aiming high! If you are interested in donating a prize, please contact us!

Other ideas in the air are:

  • Tie-breaks can be resolved by a Wii sports or Wii play challenge!

If you would want to attend a video game quiz night organised by OneTwenty please leave a comment so we can gauge interest. Preparations are in its infancy so we welcome suggestions!
